Sunday race at Sebring – NARRA USGT – May 15, 2011

Here’s the NARRA USGT race at Sebring on Sunday, May 15th 2011.

Thanks to Dan Lesser of Viper Specialty Performance and Jordon Musser of Momentum Autosports for getting my car ready in time for the race. Everything functioned flawlessly! I blew the motor at Road Atlanta (see post below) and Dan did a great job doing the rebuild and Jordan and his team popped in and out the motor as well as doing a lot of other work to maintain the car and improve the car for Sebring.

Sebring is a great track, lots of fun, and very scary for me. I know I’m leaving at least 3 seconds on the track and I wish I had the balls to go for it, but I don’t have another car in the trailer which I can pull out in the event I ball one up into a concrete wall. :) So, I just wanted to have fun and be safe and I did both.

Sebring International Raceway – May 13-15, 2011

Sebring was bittersweet. My buddy David blew his motor on the first practice session on Friday and he was out for the whole weekend. I feel his pain but it still hurts.

My car ran fine all weekend and I didn’t have any accidents other than backing into my golf cart which I forgot to move.

Saturday was a wet race. We had lots of rain and wind on both Saturday and Sunday. My best lap time was 2:17.455. Not great, but good for me.

Road Atlanta In-Car Video

Short little in-car video during NARRA USGT Race #1 at Road Atlanta Feb 26th, 2011. Smoke comes out of the right side hood vents which is where the breather is located then me trying to figure out what’s wrong and then noticing my oil pressure at zero. Damn! As quickly as I could, I turned off the key and coasted to the side and watched the race from a primo position. :( The smoke is a little hard to see in the video. It was quite obvious from where I was sitting at the time. Oil pressure was good before entering turn 1, I see smoke about at turn 3, and notice the oil presure was at zero in the esses and shut it down.

This is my in-car video of the full race (well, full race for me) at Road Atlanta during the NARRA USGT Race #1. I blew a rod bearing in the 10th lap and watched from the side of the track in turn 5 for the duration of the race. I was terrified of Road Atlanta at first. But, by this race, I was getting more comfortable with it. Too bad I didn’t get to race on Sunday. I really need to bring an extra motor with me just in case.

Road Atlanta race report

Well, it was a long and tiring weekend. It started out on Wednesday loading the trailer and truck up with the golf cart, car and all my stuff. Craig goes with me on these events and he and I left around 6:30 PM on Wednesday to meet up with my other racing buddy, David. We met David somewhere on I-20 heading east toward Atlanta, GA. The race track we’re going to is Road Atlanta in Braselton, GA just north and east of Atlanta. We stopped in a rest area just past Vicksburg, MS to rest for a few hours and then headed out again at 4 AM for Atlanta. We also met up with Brian of Ben Keating’s race team. So, we were now 3 rigs running down the road toward Atlanta.

Somewhere past Meridian, MS,  Bryan who was behind me noticed smoke coming from the right side of my trailer. I pulled over and we figured out that my wheel bearing was going bad. So, it took some time to find a place, get a wheel bearing, get the wheel off and do the repair there on the side of the road. Anyway, half the people with us were mechanics so getting it fixed up wasn’t a problem and we were back on the road again.

We get to Road Atlanta and setup camp. We arranged our trailers in a U shape as we usually do. It works out well for a place to put the cars and have a nice setup of living quarters.

Friday has us practicing in the morning with a 3 hour race in the afternoon. Road Atlanta is a scary track. There are many elevation changes and walls everywhere. The last thing I wanted to do was hit a wall so I was very careful. See some of the pictures of Road Atlanta I’ve included. I only ran for 1 hour and 10 minutes in the 3-hour race. I just wanted to get familiar with the track and work some kinks out of the car. All was good; for me. Brad, on the other hand, managed to hit the wall in turn 12. (see picture) So, Brad was done for the weekend.

Saturday, we had a practice, qualifying, and then a race. All was good. However, halfway through the race, I saw a puff of white smoke come from the right side of the hood and I then checked my oil pressure. It was at zero. This is a bad, bad thing. I shut off the car and coasted to the side of the track. Bottom line is I blew the motor. Fortunately, it’s only a rod bearing but it still requires a rebuild of the motor. I was done for the weekend since I don’t carry and extra motor with me in the trailer. Maybe I should! :)

Sunday morning I wake up to lots of noise. David was scavenging my car. (see picture) Since I couldn’t race, he wanted to try my new brake pads. Frank wanted to try my new Michelin tires (slicks). So, they were all out there pecking away at my car like a pack of vultures. Well, I was a spectator for the day, so what the heck. We tried to enjoy the day but I was very disappointed. David did well in the Sunday race and he was all happy. The good thing, though, is that a wreck or blown motor is in his near future. :)

We got all packed up and headed home on Sunday around 3:00 PM. The ride home is very boring. We stopped somewhere along the way to crash, I mean sleep, for the night and headed out about 4 am on Monday morning. All was good until Craig and I got to Dallas. Coming onto the Dallas North Tollway from I-635, the left rear wheel on my trailer came off and careened across 3 lanes of rush hour traffic. Luckily, it didn’t hit a single car and I’m not sure how that is possible. We managed to limp home with three wheels on the right and 2 wheels on the left. Just one more thing I’m going to have to get fixed.

Bottom line, this was an expensive weekend. Ugh!!!

NASA at Eagles Canyon Race Report

Yet another fun-filled race weekend. Woo hoo! Well, not really.

I finally leave PST for ECR on Thursday at 10:30 PM. Thanks to Joe and AJ, we at least get the car done in time for the race. Unfortunately, we have no time to do any testing to know if the car will do much more than just start. I get to ECR around midnight or so to the awaiting David McNiel. However, getting into the facility with my 50′ trailer takes a little practice. I tried it and got it stuck and had to back it back down into HWY 51. I also managed to break off one of 3 bogie wheels. I called David to come down and help guide me in. He had me take a wider path through the dirt and gravel and with the 2010 Dodge RAM 3500 dually in low 4-wheel drive I managed to drag the trailer up the hill scraping all the way… After 30 minutes of minimal setup and unloading, we crashed in my rig around 1 AM.

Friday is test & tune day. We decided to get setup and unload in the morning and do the test & tune on the track in the afternoon. Everything pretty much goes ok and we just wanted to refamiliarize ourselves with the track.

Saturday was a practice, qualifying and then two races. I noticed only that the track seemed like it wasn’t gripping as well as I expected. Also, ECR is getting bumpier and bumpier; dangerously so. After qualifying, David notices he cracked a rotor. He actually felt it happen on the last lap. So, he headed off for home to get a set of rotors. In the meantime, I’m getting ready for the first race and notice that the voltage is low and I have a warning light. I think my alternator quit on me. On the start, I take the lead but in turn 7 my brakes lock up as if I have no ABS and I head off track into chest high (for me) grass. Ron and everybody else passes me. I notice the solid black tire marks and begin to think my ABS is not functioning. If it had, then I could have made the turn. After one more lap, my battery gives out and I barely make it into the pits before the car dies.

I start looking for a new alternator. I call AJ at PST and I called David as well. Fortunately, David is near home and knows where he can “borrow” an alternator. It just so happens that Brad lives a few minutes from David and has an ACR in his garage. Interesting that at Hallett Brad had to borrow an alternator from me after I crashed and now I get to borrow one from him. David gets back and we get the alternator installed as well as his rotors and we’re good to go for tomorrow. Saturday racing is done.

Sunday we have a practice, qualifying and then one 45 minute race. During qualifying and only after 2 or 3 laps, David’s fire extinguisher slides in its mount and activates spraying his cockpit, engine compartment and fuel cell with a soapy mess. Of course, he had to go in and I finished qualification. David in the meantime removes his spent fire extinquisher and borrows Kevin Mixon’s so he can race.

We grid for the race and everything seems all good. We do a rolling start and at the green we race. However, in turn 3 I get a little agressive and not having ABS I lock up the wheels and barely managed to keep from hitting and from being hit as I plow through the grass and over the curbing. I have it on video. :) I did manage to bend a wheel, though. David was doing much better than me. he was gaining on the leader and came close to taking him until he spun out. David took second. I was just trying to finish. At first, I didn’t know how badly my car was damaged so I just maintained my position. The bent wheel was jerking the wheel severely and I just hung on. As I felt more confident that something wasn’t going to break or fall off, I started going faster. I have no idea what position I finished. But, I finished. :)

Here is the video of the starts of the 2 races I was in. I didn’t see a reason to show the entire, boring 45 minute race on Sunday other than the start.

After it’s all said and done, I had a good time. The new trailer worked out very well. I’m disappointed the car didn’t do as well but I knew it was a potential problem since it wasn’t tested after my Hallett crash. I’m just glad I didn’t go all the way to Utah this weekend because it would have been a bigger dissappointment.

Hallett post-crash report

It’s Thursday September 30th, 2010 at 10:30 PM and the car is now ready just in time for the last race of the season for the NASA Texas Region. The car has now been put back together and we’re heading out to Eagles Canyon Raceway. The car has not been tested on the track. It starts and that’s about all we’re sure of. The car has a new hood, front bumper cover, right-side rocker panel, and rear bumper as well as a trimmed down and repaired splitter. I also now have Lexan windows front and rear rather than glass. We may never get all the broken glass out of the car from Hallett. :) The suspension was removed from the car and sent to California to be repaired. We have yet to get it back so we had to “borrow” suspension components to get the car ready to race for tomorrow.

The car is also sporting a new wrap by Skinz. The car looks great as you can see here.

The wrap is not meant to be political but instead a reminder of our history as Americans. With quotes from our founding fathers, the constitution written as if on parchment, and the Gadsden flag with the words of “Don’t Tread on Me” and the rattlesnake representing America. These things are part of our history of the birth of our nation and we should remember what it took to have the freedom we have today and not give it up so easily.

New race trailer with living quarters

I decided to go the next step and get a larger trailer with living quarters. I got a Cargo Mate 50′ trailer with 22′ of living quarters and 28′ of garage. It’s plenty big for my car, a golf cart, and all my stuff as well as a slideout in the living quarters and a sofa that reclines and makes out into a full size bed. Here are some pictures:

Friday the 13th Crash at Hallett

Viper Days – Viper Racing League – Friday the 13th Practice Session at Hallett – 8/13/10

Friday the 13th really came into play today. This was my first practice session on the first day of the event. My personal goal for the weekend was to be in the low 1:19s which I figured I could be there by Sunday. So, I go out at 9 AM this Friday on used 6+ session tires just to re-familiarize myself with the track. I notice after a lap or two that I pulled off a 1:20.0. “Hmm…” I thought to myself. I may be able to get into the low 1:19s on my first session of the weekend rather than having to wait 2 more days. I also thought to myself, “Maybe with new tires I might be able to get into the 1:18s!” Me, being impatient you see, went for it. Well, after a couple more laps my plans were dashed; dashed to Hell! And, my car was trashed. Fortunately, it’s just body parts and I’ll be back on track in a few weeks. It will take longer for my ego to mend, though. :)

For some reason, my rear camera wasn’t working. I wish it had been. The view from the rear when going into the tire wall would have been cool…

I’ve watched the crash many times. I’ve received several opinions about why it happened. Here’s what I think… Coming into turn 8, it was normal to have the backend get a little loose. It did on my previous laps so I expected it this time too. However, this time, notice how the car get so upset going over the curbing. It’s worse on the crash lap than other laps. I also took more curb on the crash lap than previous laps. I think the backend started coming around and I attempted to counter steer out of it but the car was too upset and just didn’t respond. If I’m wrong, let me know what you think.

We got the car back on track later the same day. However, the hood pins must have been weakened during the crash. So, coming around turn 1 the hood popped open, crashed into my windshield, broke over my roof, and broke out my rear glass. Friday the 13th just isn’t my day…
